New DHS director presents premiere production, ‘Pride and Prejudice’

Ben Mattson isn’t new to Durango, but he is new to Durango High School. The new theater instructor will make his directing debut this weekend with the opening of “Pride and Prejudice.”

Mattson took over the high school position this fall and starred in last month’s production of “Rent” at the Durango Arts Center.

DHS’s Troupe 1096 will present the engaging and classic play, which follows the story of ultimate matchmaking between two unlikely Regency Era characters Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy.

The play opens at 7 p.m. Friday at Durango High School. Another performance is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, and the following weekend. Tickets are $10 for the general public, $5 for students with ID. Call 259-1630 for ticketing information.

Sephardic Latino musician to perform twice in Durango

New Mexico-based musician Consuelo Luz is bringing her unique tunes – a fusion of Jewish spirit and Latin power – to Durango for the weekend.

Luz will present music from her latest album and previous work in a special concert titled, “Singing The Tree of Life,” at 7 p.m. Saturday at Congregation Har Shalom in Durango.

The following morning, Luz will continue to impart her music and wisdom on the crowd with a musical lecture, “The Sefirot and the Power of the Hebrew Letters.” This lecture is free and open to the public, also at Congregation Har Shalom.

Balcony celebrates anniversary with live music

Celebrating the milestone of six years in business is Durango watering hole Balcony Bar & Grill, with drink specials and a concert featuring the western-rock music of the Lawn Chair Kings at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

In addition to the Balcony, the Backstage at the Balcony is also celebrating a year in operation. Funk roots band Elder Grown will play at 8:30 p.m., promising a contagious energy to the stage, blending reggae, roots and hip-hop-inspired funk tunes.

Drink specials will be going on all day. Cover charge for the Backstage at the Balcony is $5 and begins at 6:30 p.m.

Snowboarding film hits big screen at Durango Arts Center

An epic night depicting pros flying through powder, almost literally, is sure to get fans of the snowboarding and skiing industry stoked for a film premiere this weekend.

“Paradise Waits,” a new film produced by the Teton Gravity Research, is a mesmerizing collection of footage portraying some of the finest skiing, riding and dedication to the sport in some of the best and worst riding conditions.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 day of. Two showings will premiere at the Durango Arts Center, with doors opening at 5 p.m. for the first showing and 8:30 p.m. for the late-night show. There will be prize giveaways and drawings for a guided trip to shred Japan with SASS Global Travel.
