The Weekender

Some top picks for what to do this weekend in and around Durango

Mountainfilm coming to Durango

If you can’t come to Mountainfilm, then Mountainfilm on Tour will come to you ... or in this case, us, Saturday at the Durango Arts Center.

The Tour is an offshoot of the annual Mountainfilm Festival that takes place in Telluride. This weekend, we’ll get a chance to see a selection of shorts and features from the event. And the best part is that the host of the event, Durango Nature Studies, will benefit from a pretty cool event.

And it’s not just for the grownups.

The Tour will present a kids’ matinee at 3 p.m., with doors opening at 2:30.

Kiddos will get to check out films ranging from wildlife far removed from Durango to a talking shell. Cost for kids is $8 in advance, $10 at the door; adults are $10 advance, $13 at the door.

And later Saturday, it’s the adults’ turn. Films begin at 7 p.m., doors will open at 5:30. This year, the Tour is offering a mix of environmental, cultural and adventure shorts.

They’re also going to feed us, thanks to grub offered by Fired Up Pizza and Zia. Drinks will also be available. Oh, and did we mention the gear auction?

Tickets are $15 in advance, 20 bucks at the door; $10 for students/kids.

Pop in for Pop-up Art Show

Pop-ups are popping up everywhere lately, and Durango is no different. On Friday and Saturday, Surya Health & Wellness, 1032 Main Ave., will host a Pop-up Art Show featuring the works of clay artist Lisa Pedolsky and printmaker Merritt Winkler.

Pedolsky works out of her Two Fish Studio in Durango, where she makes ceramics for galleries and exhibits nationwide. Her work is cool, but also useful.

Winkler’s Stamped Out Press is based in Mancos, and for this show, her Organic Mechanic series will be featured.

The cool thing about this collaborative duo? They’re mother and daughter, and this is their first show together.

A reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, and an art show will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Surya.

Admission is free.

An Evening With Suzy Bogguss

Country music fans, Friday night’s your night. Acclaimed country singer Suzy Bogguss will be playing at the Community Concert hall at Fort Lewis College. She’s recently put out an album of Merle Haggard songs – but don’t call “Lucky” a tribute album. “I don’t try to imitate Merle, this is my interpretation of his songs,” she says on her website.

Showtime is 7 p.m.

Tickets are $25/$35 and are available online at www.durangoconcerts.com, by calling 247-7657 or at the Ticket Office inside the Durango Welcome Center at Eighth Street and Main Avenue.
