Belly dancers invite public to concert, dance party

Explore the different moods and mysteries of womanhood through a different side of belly dancing with Mataholla Moon Belly Dance Troupe at 6:45 p.m. Friday at the Henry Strater Theatre.

Mataholla Moon Belly Dance troupe started with six dancers, and has since grown over the years, performing in various shows and venues across Southern Colorado. Through exploring the different emotions and thrills of belly dance, the dance troupe brings this storied dance form to life again and again.

Twenty dancers from the region will come together on stage for a Halloween-inspired show. A rock ‘n’ roll dance party will immediately follow the performance. Tickets are $13,available at the door and Henrystratertheatre.tix.com.

Haunting black & white photography exhibit opens

A new showing at The Open Shutter Gallery on Friday will exhibit the elegant black and white darkroom photographs of California photographer Roman Loranc.

Entitled “Secretive Beauty,” the showcase of handcrafted darkroom photographs span the greater portion of Loranc’s photographic career. The photographer’s return to his homeland of Poland inspired many of the haunting and timeless photographs on display during the exhibit.

Some activities for the whole family

Running from Saturday to Halloween, the Great Pumpkin Patch Express will take families from downtown Durango to a pumpkin patch fit for the Great Pumpkin.

During the 1/2-hour train ride to the pumpkin patch, children will receive a trick-or-treat bag to collect goodies. Characters from Peanuts will greet riders and a professional photographer will be on site to snag photos available for purchase.

As for an indoor family-oriented activity, the public is invited to celebrate the release of “Gulliver’s Babies,” written and illustrated by Southwest Colorado’s own Marikay Shellman, at Magpies Newsstand Cafe Saturday.

The children’s book was inspired after Gulliver, an owl who was brought into Avian Reconditioning Center (ARC) in Florida in 1986. Over the years, Gulliver helped to raise over 230 babies at the center.

The party will feature a meet-AND-greet reading by the author, signing and ice cream and coffee from 3:30 to 5 p.m. For more information visit magpieacresstudio.com.
