Things to do in and around Durango

Mike Love to open for the Wailers

One of the best things about reggae music is listening to it in the winter – all the snow, gray skies and bone-chilling temperatures immediately disappear upon hearing the first few notes of sunny reggae.

And what better place to hear some nice warm music than at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College when Mike Love takes the stage as the opening act for the Wailers.

Love, who hails from Oahu, Hawaii, comes from a long line of musicians, and actually started with classical piano as a teenager – his style of music makes it hard to pin him down to just one genre. And he’s no slouch when it comes to performing, having shared the stage with the likes of Dave Matthews, Steel Pulse and Jack Johnson.

And with lyrics promoting healing and inspiration, there will be no better place to be to shake off the winter blues than the Concert Hall on Saturday night.

The show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $38/$47. For more information, call 247-7657.

The most appropriate name for an exhibit

By the time you read this, we will have gotten somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 million inches of new snow in and around Durango. School has been canceled and you are most likely about to blow out your back shoveling, shoveling, shoveling.

Take a really good look outside and enjoy the winter for its beauty, and then head down to the Durango Arts Center to celebrate even more.

The DAC, 802 East Second Ave., will be unveiling a new exhibit, “The White Season,” starting with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.

The show features works by Sandra Butler, Charlene Geiss, Mary Ellen Long, Andrea Martens, Maureen May, Catherine Nash and Joan K. Russell and will run Friday through Jan. 30.

So take a minute away from the practical chores that winter brings and take in the season from a different angle. Who knows – maybe you’ll gain a new appreciation for all things winter.
