The Weekender: Things to do in and around Durango

Things to do in and around Durango

It’s your favorite schoolhouseIf you were a child of the ’70s and ’80s, then chances are pretty good you spent your Saturday mornings eating cereal in your underwear in front of the TV watching Saturday morning cartoons. And chances are you remember (and can probably still sing along to) the “Schoolhouse Rock” songs that would come on – “Three is a Magic Number”; “Conjunction Junction” and “I’m Just a Bill” and a host of others that would trick us into learning through catchy lyrics and cartoon characters.

Thanks to the Durango Arts Center Applause! program, you can relive the show with its production of “Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr.,” running Friday and Saturday and special Afterschool Outreach Performances on Monday and Tuesday.

In this production, Tom is a new teacher who is worried about his first day of teaching who tries to relax by watching television. As he watches, characters representing different facets of his personality come to the fore and show him how to keep his students engaged by using music and imagination in his class.

Friday and Saturday performances will begin at 7 p.m. at the DAC Theatre. Tickets are $8 for DAC members and children 12 and younger and $12 for non-members.

The Afterschool Outreach Performances will be held at 4:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, also at the theater. Tickets for these performances are $1 for children 12 and younger and $5 general.

Jam, jazz collide at Animas City TheatreLike jazz? Love Phish? Check out Jazz is Phish on Sunday night at the Animas City Theatre, 128 E. College Drive.

What’s cool about this tribute to Phish is that it’s instrumental – inspired by “Jazz is Dead,” a Grateful Dead tribute. Founded in 2015 by Adam Chase and Matthew Chase, Jazz is Phish uses the musical framework of the original band to explore what happens when jazz and jam music collide.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Sunday with the 18-and-older show starting at 8:30.

Tickets are $20 for 18+ general admission; $25 for 21+ VIP, which includes balcony viewing, drink specials and coat check. Get yours at Southwest Sound in Durango or online at http://www.durangomassive.com.
