The West is History

25 Years Ago: South Durango residents once again have implored the City Council to study landfill options and plan for future technology before it chooses a new dump site. The decision must not be based on money alone, said Mary Jo Rakowski. “We must be innovative, progressive, leap into the future now in order to ensure our future.” The councilors and City Manager Bob Ledger assured the residents they were taking time and care to study all options. “The fact we have made no decision suggests we are sensitive to your concerns,” Ledger said.

50 Years Ago: Thursday night passengers on the non-stop flight from Denver had a taste of the cold night air at high altitude and popping ears. A window gave way suddenly, reducing the pressure about 20 minutes out of Durango. The Frontier plane overflew Durango and had the window repaired at Farmington. Among the passengers were: Dr. and Mrs. J.E. Koplowitz, Mrs. Jackson Clark and her son, Jackson. The last incident of this kind took place last winter when Gov. and Mrs. John Love were aboard.
