I was saddened and disturbed to learn of the repeated theft of a rainbow flag from the front yard of a Durango residence. I understand there was also some vandalism involved and that both events were reported to law enforcement.
These are criminal, unconstitutional and threatening acts that threaten the quality of life in our community, not just the obvious targets, e.g., LGBTQIA persons and their allies, but all of us. If it’s acceptable to persecute anyone for their sexual identity and orientation, then none of us are completely safe from such persecution. If only for our personal well-being, we simply have to make this unacceptable.
Let’s make this beautiful area a safe place for everyone to live. I hope that anyone who suffers or witnesses these or similar acts of vandalism will promptly report them to law enforcement.
