Summer is winding down and parents are starting to think about back to school time, with Durango schools starting in less than three weeks. Where did summer go?

Next week is the La Plata County Fair, held from Aug. 10 to 14 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. This is a great time for the entire family, with rodeos, rides, a corn shucking competition, the 4H BBQ cookoff and the ever popular demolition derby.
The Durango Blues Train makes its final runs of 2016 with trains running on Aug. 12 and 13. All tickets for the train on the 13th are sold, but there are still tickets available for the 12th. Speaking of the train, Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad hosts the RailRocker Festival Aug.18 to 21. Formerly known as Railfest, this event celebrates the proud culture of the toughest of the men and women who settled these parts by building mountain railroads to find their riches and dreams. Saturday Aug. 27 brings us two events – the Thirsty 13 Half Marathon and the 18th annual San Juan Brewfest. There might be a few spots left for this year’s half marathon, but hurry to claim your spot by registering at Thirsty13.com.
After the Thirsty 13, head over to Buckley Park for the largest beer tasting festival in the Four Corners, the San Juan Brewfest. This year the Brewfest features 54 craft breweries, three live bands, and all proceeds benefit United Way of Southwest Colorado.
