They need a home for the holidays

Humane Society has 12 dogs for immediate adoption

The La Plata County Humane Society is hosting its annual dog-adoption event, which will take place through Dec. 24.

“The 12 Dog Days of Christmas has been a very successful event in the past, and we’ve got our paws crossed that it will be another successful year,” said Jonell Jones, marketing coordinator at the humane society.

This year, Jonell added two days to the event because there are more sponsorships.

The dogs chosen “need extra help getting adopted,” Jones said. Usually they include senior-aged dogs or ones that fall under the “lonely hearts club,” meaning they have been in the shelter for more than 21 days.

On the dog’s day, they will venture into downtown Durango wearing bells and “Adopt Me” jackets. Typically, dogs go out between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., because that is the busiest time for people to be out. The dogs will visit local businesses. They also will visit their sponsoring business. Jones said the same companies typically sponsor the dogs each year, because they enjoying helping with the event.

The first dog to kick off the event is Prince, a year-old shepherd mix who has been in the shelter for 150 days. Ska Brewing Co., a “good-luck charm” during the Dog Days event, is his sponsor.

Jones said about half the dogs featured during the Dog Days event get adopted each year. If someone is interested in adopting, the adoption will be finalized at the humane society, where all the normal paperwork will be filled out. An adoption price on senior dogs is $29 and for lonely hearts dogs, the price is $39.

“I’m hoping they all end up going home,” Jones said.
