Congratulations, America, we have finally been able to cow Ecuador into backing down from its support of the World Health Organization position on breast-feeding. All we had to do was threaten Ecuador with tariffs and the lifting of military financial support. Now that’s how you make America great again.
The Russians, in support of the WHO proclamation, which was about the value of breast-feeding of children relative to their being fed prepared formula, said that our action in Ecuador was really not very nice. But we are not upset with the Russians. They are our friends, remember?
Apparently, the Trump administration has considered withdrawing entirely from the WHO. Since virtually every action this administration takes is intended to be mean to people, it would come as no great surprise that they would be thinking in that direction. It fits in perfectly with repeal of health care in America and the Bannons and Millers whispering formulas for the deconstruction of the administrative state into the ear of this president.
In less than two years’ time, the Trump White House has managed to turn America, formerly lighthouse to the world, into the world’s bully. Our standing has faded diplomatically, economically and socially. In this brief period, we have become both international laughingstock and pariah.
However, we still have the vote, and shame on us if this November we don’t use it to turn the Republican pantywaist Congress into an overwhelming progressive victory. We must vote. We must go to the polls and take someone with us to vote. Shame on us if we fail.
