If defense wins championships, Bayfield High School is in the running for its third state 2A football title.
In three playoff games, no team scored a point - any point - against the Wolverines.
On Saturday, that became a 21-0 win over the Resurrection Christian Cougars in Greeley.
The Cougars didn't give up, however, intercepting the ball with a minute left in the game. Hunter Killough answered back, however, intercepting the ball with 12 seconds left, and the game was over.
After a somewhat slow start in the first quarter by Wolverine standards, BHS moved into a higher gear Saturday against Resurrection Christian in the state 2A semi-final game, finishing the first half with a 14-0 lead.
Bayfield almost scored at the beginning of the game with a run by Dawson Heide. Chris Mooney attempted to kick a field goal, but it was a little short.
Bayfield's defense, however, was crushing it, keeping the Cougars in negative yards in the first quarter. Ryan Phelps sacked the Resurrection quarterback twice to add to his lead for sacks in all Colorado football qualifications.
With 4:02 left in the first quarter, Hayden Farmer threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to Carl Heide. Mooney's PAT kick was good for a 7-0 lead.
At the start of the second quarter, Kirk Malone scored another big hit for the Wolverine defense.
An eight-yard touchdown pass from Farmer to Snooks sealed the second quarter for the Wolverines. Mooney made his kick for a 14-0 lead in the second quarter.
Resurrection did try to come back, making a long pass that got the Cougars on the six-yard line in the second, but they didn't cross the goal line.
Farmer was sacked at the end of the second quarter, leading to a Bayfield punt by Phelps.
During the third quarter, Heide ran the ball in for a touchdown, but a holding call against the Wolverines brought it back. Surprisingly for the Wolverines, they did not score in the third.
In the fourth, however, the Wolverines blocked a Resurrection punt, bringing the ball down on the one yard line. David Hawkins ran the ball in one yard, the kick was good, and it was 21-0.
Defensive work continued throughout the second half as Garrett Beebe and Dylan Hilliker joined the Wolverines in pummelling the Cougars. Cole Wood tackled a Cougar for a three-yard loss.
David Bray on KLJH FM estimated 300-plus Wolverines attended the game in Greeley. The crowd is close in size to Resurrection Christian's.
So many people logged on to the KLJH website to listen to the game that the radio station's server crashed, Bray said, and coverage was not available via the website. That meant that more than 10,000 listeners were trying to log onto the site. The radio broadcast was fine, however, and customers at Brenda's Old West Cafe listened to the game at the restaurant.
The game was played at Northridge High School in Greeley because Resurrection's field isn't large enough to host playoff football under Colorado High School Activities Association rules.
On the other side of the 2A bracket, La Junta crushed Eaton 42-0.
