This foolish amendment could ruin us

Why do both conservative organizations like Club 20 and liberal cities like Boulder oppose Amendment 74?

Because it’s a change to the state constitution that will embroil state and local governments in endless lawsuits if it passes. A similar law passed in Oregon and it has cost the Oregon taxpayers more than $20 billion in just three years. Don’t let Colorado go down that path. Vote NO on Amendment 74.

The thinly veiled intended consequence of Amendment 74 is to allow oil and gas companies to sue the state for setbacks. If both Proposition 112 and Amendment 74 pass, the oil and gas companies will sue the state for millions of dollars. Do you want your Colorado tax dollars to go toward endless lawsuits with oil and gas companies? I don’t.

An unintended consequence of Amendment 74 is that it will completely paralyze local governments. City and county governments will be unable to change zoning regulations without risking being sued into bankruptcy. Is the zoning throughout Colorado perfect as it is? Do you want it to never change? It better be perfect how it is if Amendment 74 passes because the government will lose all flexibility to change zoning.

Amendment 74 sounds innocuous, but it is not. Tax money should be spent on infrastructure and services, not in fending off lawsuits facilitated by this foolish amendment.
