What do first-time visitors wonder about Durango as they wander about town?
They ask or say “It’s just a cowboy town.” But what about the cowboy poets? As visitors become better acquainted with town, they discover that this village is much more than expected.
There’s culture.
Musical groups that are world-class that sing at the Kennedy Center in New York City, and a group called Hawkapella that sings in the Czech Republic. And it’s a caring community with at least 100 non-profits. In fact, the Community Foundation has received $416,000 to fund emergency relief.
Then there’s the college.
Fort Lewis College, that provides scholarships to young people who never dreamed that there would be a life after high school.
Even dogs and cats find homes after our citizens check out animals that are available at the La Plata County Humane Society.
Finding a restaurant that becomes a favorite is a piece of cake. Francisco’s, an old favorite, is reopening under the ownership of the family that originally opened the restaurant.
Oscar’s features a train that circuits the ceiling. And then there’s Sizzling Siam, the Thai restaurant that offers Pad Pak, Pad Kee Mao, and Larb Nha.
And when a young man goes off to college, his mother tells him, “Albert, don’t forget to look at the roses.”
So you can call Durango a community with a heart, a compassionate town that cares.
