The Durango High School mountain biking team was well-represented atop the leader boards at the Colorado Mountain Biking League State Championship.
Juniors Emmett McManus and Kai Lokey finished fourth and fifth in the boys varsity race out of 95 riders.
McManus finished with a time of 1:12:39 and Lokey wasn’t far behind, crossing the finish line at 1:12:44.
“I definitely had a big goal to win it,” McManus said. “I think I can be proud of the season that I had in the region, but I definitely would have liked to have made it come together.”
Demons sophomore Betty Holcomb finished fourth in the girls varsity race out of 56 riders with a time of one hour, 27 minutes and 31 seconds.
Sophomore Ellie Shaw won the junior varsity girls championship for Durango, and sophomore Jake Sandau won the JV boys championship as well.
Shaw placed first out of 102 riders with a time of 59:14 after two laps on the Glenwood Springs course compared to three laps for the varsity races. Sandau beat 155 other JV boys with a time of 50:03.
“The team did really well,” Durango coach Martin McCreight said. “We had two state champions in the JV category, Ellie Shaw and Jake Sandau. Jake Sandau has shown the potential to be at the top of the podium all season but it’s a short season and not every race is yours and this one was his. It was awesome to see him at the top of that podium for state.”
Leif Bryan of Fairview won the boys individual title with a time of 1:11:50. Lauren Carlin won the girls title with a time of 1:24:34.
