Through rain and/or shine ...

Bayfield girls win their side of the Pine River track draw

BAYFIELD

Welcome to spring track and field in Colorado.

Rain dumped on the Pine River Invitational at Wolverine Country Stadium on Saturday in Bayfield up until the 1:15 p.m. break, then the skies cleared for a clear finish.

“(The rain) slows things down. It’s kind of disappointing that it happened because we were really looking for good state qualifying times,” BHS head coach Sherry Kimball said. “It turned out well, I think.”

The Wovlerines won the girls meet with 118 points, just edging out Montezuma-Cortez, which had 117.

Bayfield’s boys team finished second with 114 points behind Pagosa Springs’ 127.

“We’re missing a couple of our key boys, and that made a bit of a difference in the team scoring,” Kimball said. “But, overall, I thought we did very well.”

Jessica Cusick came within three seconds of breaking the school record in her first-ever girls 800-meter run, finishing in 2 minutes, 25.55 seconds.

“Without competition, she ran very well,” Kimball said.

Bayfield’s Aubree Lorenzen finished second at 2:43.63, 18 seconds behind Cusick. Lorenzen won the girls 1,600-meter run in 6:14.19 with a frantic sprint in the final 100 meters to catch Dove Creek’s Kristin Knuckles.

The Wolverines’ girls 4x100-meter relay team of Morgan Allred, Amy Roach, Jessie Roukema and Ashlyn Schulder finished first in 53.57 seconds.

Allred, Brittany Hunter, Roukema and Schulder won the girls 800-meter sprint medley relay in 1:57.53.

“We wish our times would get better, but as long as we’re super close, it’s good,” said Roukema, daughter of Jerrin and Shane Roukema. “Considering in the beginning we weren’t as good as we wanted to be, and now everyone’s doing a lot better, that’s pretty nice.”

Hunter won the pole vault with a leap of 7 feet, 9 inches, leading a BHS sweep of the top three spots. Katie Hawkins took second at 7-3, and Allred finished third at 6-9.

Brian Mashak gave the Wolverines’ boys team wins in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. He finished the 100 in 11.89 seconds and the 200 in 23.95 seconds.

Trevor Gabbard legged out the boys 3,200-meter run in 10:56.3 to come in first place, and that was after scoring two goals for the Durango High School lacrosse team in a 17-1 win over Glenwood Springs on Saturday morning.

“I’m kind of sore from that, so my goal was to really win it and break 11 (minutes),” said Gabbard, son of Joe and Kelly Gabbard. “I’ve been injured all week with a pulled groin, so I was just trying to get back into it.”

John Arnold won the boys javelin throw at 115-3.

The Wolverines will head to Aztec on Friday for the Aztec B&B Invitational.

The youth movement is alive and well for the Bobcats.

Three underclassmen picked up wins Saturday as the IHS boys team finished fourth and the girls sixth.

IHS freshman Rachel Cooper won the girls 3,200-meter run in 14:10.93, 23 seconds ahead of her closest competitor.

“She’s just a little stud,” IHS head coach Tony Kimball said.

Alana Watts, also a freshman, took first in the girls javelin throw with a 69-1, which almost was 10 feet beyond the second-place finisher.

“It’s actually a big honor. My mother is a shot put champ, and to fill her shoes as a freshman is my goal,” said Watts, daughter of Laurie Monte. “For javelin, I hope to hold a record at my school.”

Wyatt Hayes, a sophomore, won the boys long jump at 19-3. He didn’t need to jump in finals because of how far ahead he was of the field.

“I passed every jump because conditions of the pit were pretty bad,” said Hayes, son of Cindy and Tim Hayes.

Hayes also took third in the boys 200-meter dash in 24.21 seconds and the boys triple jump at 38-7.75.

Mike Perez came in second in the boys 110-meter hurdles in 17.29 seconds.

The Bobcats’ boys 4x400-meter team of Bryan Gram, Hayes, Nicholas Herrera and Perez finished second at 3:39.63.

Gram, Justis Herrera, Fabian Martinez and Chase Sanchez also took second in the boys 4x800-meter relay at 10:28.43.

Keith Joosten finished second in the boys pole vault at 11-3, and Tyler Riepel took third at 8-9.

Kelton Richmond took third in the discus, javelin and shot put. He threw the shot 40-10.25, the discus 125-8 and the javelin 83-4.

Blaine Mickey finished second in the javelin at 112-10.

“Some amazing performances out of almost everybody,” the IHS head coach said. “We were (setting personal records) all over the place.”

IHS will join BHS at the Aztec B&B Invitational.
