Rain and thunderstorms are expected through Thursday in and around Durango, according to the National Weather Service.
There is a 50 to 70 percent chance of rain Tuesday and Wednesday, with showers possible at higher elevations on Thursday, said Andrew Lyons, meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Grand Junction.
There is an increasing chance of showers starting Monday. The storm system should be gone by Friday, Lyons said.
Thunderstorms are expected during the early afternoon Wednesday with possible thunderstorms on Thursday, Lyons said.
Winds are expected to be 5-10 mph.
Low winds and humidity from the rain is expected to mitigate the fire danger, Lyons said. Fire danger is worrisome when winds reach 15-30 miles per hour, he said.
However, drought conditions increase the possibility of lightning sparking a wildfire, said Scot Davis, spokesman for the Durango Fire Protection District.
DFPD will be watching for lightning starts, he said. The department uses applications that detect lightning almost instantaneously, he said.
