Time to regulate short-term rentals

As a resident of La Plata County, I’m frustrated by the lack of restrictions on short-term rentals in our community. The rise of platforms like Airbnb and VRBO has changed hospitality, but it negatively impacts our neighborhoods and the essence of La Plata County.

The absence of STR regulations has created numerous problems affecting our quality of life. Once tranquil neighborhoods are now disrupted by the constant turnover of short-term guests, leading to noise, parking issues and a diminished sense of community. Longtime residents feel strained as properties operate more like transient hotels than homes.

Economically, STRs may seem beneficial, but they often remove essential long-term rental housing from the market, driving up rental prices and making it harder for local families and workers to find affordable housing. In a county already facing housing shortages, the proliferation of STRs is a significant concern.

La Plata County needs to act. We require clear regulations on STRs to ensure responsible management, such as limiting licenses, enforcing stricter noise ordinances and requiring property owners to live on-site or nearby. These steps would help preserve our neighborhoods and maintain the unique charm of La Plata County.

Let’s advocate for sensible regulations that balance welcoming visitors with protecting residents' quality of life. I urge our local leaders and community to address this issue before it worsens. Our home deserves better.
