Times columnist wins state press award

Carole McWilliams' columns, "View From the Boondocks" received second place in the best serious column writing category from the Colorado Press Association.

Two of McWilliams' columns were submitted, entitled "Holiday tree provides light and cheer on dark days" and "Participation needed in caucuses."

The award was for the Class 2 category of publications, which are weekly newspapers with circulations between 1,001 and 2,000.

"This captured an aspect of the Christmas season people don't often discuss," the judge wrote. "Very descriptive and poignant." McWilliams' award was announced Saturday at the Better Newspaper Contest at the CPA convention in Denver.

McWilliams is a former senior staff writer for the Times who worked for the paper for 30 years, and she still lives in Bayfield. This was her 24th individual award from the press association.
