Tipton needs to support the ‘Dreamers’

Scott Tipton must stop using the lives and dignity of immigrants as bargaining chips and support the passage of a clean Dream Act without delay.

Time is running out before the end of the legislative session. If Congress leaves without firm protections for Dreamers in place, almost 790,000 more people will spend the holidays under the shadow of fear, uncertainty, and possible separation from their loved ones.

Congressman Tipton seeks to tie DACA protections to new restrictions or enforcement measures. While portrayed as a fair compromise, the costs of anti-immigrant policies are often absolute.

Injustices in our immigration system have deprived countless people of their freedom and safety, including deporting people to places where they are in grave danger. There is no such thing as a fair compromise that deprives people of their lives.

The holiday season reminds us of the centrality of the persecuted and the suffering of many. At this time of year, I encourage Congressman Tipton to open his heart to the possibility of greater compassion, especially to the stranger.

It is never too late for any of us to look inside ourselves and find more room for love.
