Tired Durango girls basketball throttles Telluride

DHS goes 2-1 in opening week of season

The Durango High School girls basketball team played an overtime slugfest at Delta on Friday night. The team returned to Durango at midnight and had to be back on the bus by 7 a.m. Saturday for a trip to Telluride.

Tired legs were to be expected, but the scoreboard never reflected it. The Demons (2-1) outscored Telluride 17-2 in the first quarter and rolled to a 51-24 road win against the Miners (0-2).

“Shout out to the bus drivers Rick and Steve driving through bad roads,” DHS head coach Tim Fitzpatrick said.

The Demons led 28-9 at the half, allowing Fitzpatrick to play a lot of his bench in the second.

Mason Rowland led DHS with 13 points, while Ana Cuntz finished with nine. Maddy McManus and Kyle Rowland each had six. Freshman Carter Neiman finished with four.

DHS will rest up before it will host Centauri at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
