’Tis (officially) the season

Parade, tree lighting kick off holiday

Despite the retail creep of the holidays into October – if not September – the day after Thanksgiving is the official start to the season in Durango.

Santa made his first visit to town Friday as hundreds of Durangoans of all ages caroled their way down Main Avenue for the official lighting of the Christmas tree.

As always, businesspeople, churches and entertainment venues have planned something special to light up the town as we enter the darkest days of the year.

“With its dazzling lights and small town charm, it’s no wonder Durango has been named one of HGTV’s Top 10 Christmas towns,” the Durango Area Tourism Office said in describing HoliDazzle 2015.

One of the highlights is Noel Night, which, contrary to its name, begins at 10 a.m. and continues until 9 p.m. Friday. Entertainment, downtown business deals and giveaways are designed to entice shoppers downtown.
