To adopt or not? – That is the question to ask yourself

Adopting a dog, cat or other critters is an important decision. Here are things to consider when thinking about bringing an animal into your life:

When weighing this important decision, there are many factors to keep in mind. Animals are not disposable, and that commitment to adopt is for a lifetime, or at least it should be.

There are many advantages to pet ownership:

Unconditional love and loyalty. You and your pet will form an incredible bond that will last a lifetime.Always a happy, friendly, nonjudgmental face to greet you, day in and day out. Day after day your pet will always be thrilled to see you and to let you know this in no unmistakable terms. An understanding, attentive ear no matter what it is you want to share.Kids who may be too nervous to read aloud in front of others usually feel comfortable reading to a dog or cat.It has been demonstrated that petting an animal lowers a person’s blood pressure and has an overall calming effect. Walking a dog or cat daily is a healthy and low-stress activity.Of course, everything has some disadvantages. Here are a few to keep in mind before you adopt:

Costs of food, supplies, vet visits. These things vary by size, activity level and breed.Time commitment, such as walking, grooming and cleaning. This can be an inconvenience at times – how your pet will be cared for if you are out of town?Just like animals, people come in all sizes, ages and activity levels. A senior citizen with limited energy may not do well with a 12-month old puppy that weighs 80 pounds and is very energetic. If you have ever endured the loss of a pet, then you understand the empty feeling, a void in your life and how much they contributed to your well-being. LPCHS has many amazing animals to choose from if you are considering bringing an animal into your life.
