Toddler killed, mom injured in crash on Highway 550

A toddler died and his mother was injured when their SUV rolled about 9 a.m. Friday in the 6500 block of U.S. Highway 550, north of the state line.

Gabriella Gething, 19, was driving north when she went off the side of the road, over-corrected and rolled the Chevy Silverado, said Capt. Adrian Driscoll of Colorado State Patrol.

Gething, a resident of Aztec, was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center with serious injuries, he said.

The 2-year-old boy was in the back seat and in a car seat, Driscoll said. But the car seat may not have been properly attached to the vehicle, he said. Law enforcement officers are investigating how the car seat was used.

Gething was ticketed for careless driving resulting in death, a misdemeanor that requires a court appearance, Driscoll said.
