Sixth Judicial District Attorney Christian Champagne, running unopposed, was re-elected Tuesday to serve another four years as the top prosecutor for Archuleta, La Plata and San Juan counties.

Champagne, a Democrat, tallied 22,805 votes as of 9:45 p.m.

“I am deeply appreciative of this great community and look forward to being of service for the next four years,” Champagne said in an emailed statement to The Durango Herald.

Champagne was first elected in 2016 after beating challenger Ben Lammons, a Southern Ute Indian Tribe prosecutor. Previously, Champagne was an assistant district attorney since 2009, and before that, worked as a public defender in Durango.

In a previous interview, Champagne said he wants to focus on restorative justice programs, taking serious cases to trial and rooting out racial inequality in the criminal justice system over the next four years.

Champagne is currently the top prosecutor in the trial for Mark Redwine, a Vallecito man accused of killing his son, Dylan, in 2012, by far the most high-profile case in La Plata County in recent memory.
