Tough course ‘bites’ Skyhawks

FLC men’s golf eighth at the Chaps Invitational

A tough Texas course showed its teeth to the Skyhawks.

The Fort Lewis College men’s golf team finished eighth out of nine teams participating in the Chaps Invitational at The Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas. The Rawls course is home to Texas Tech and will host a Division I regional tournament this season.

FLC posted rounds of 356, 336 and 351 to finish at 1,043 for the tournament. Par was 864.

Wayland Baptist won with a team total of 903. Bethany College’s Ben Johnson carded an even-par 72, 3-under 69 and a 7-over 79 to win the individual tournament with 220 strokes, 4-over par.

“We came to a ‘big boy’ golf course, and it definitely took a bite out of us,” FLC head coach Guy Begay said in a news release. “We got a lot of work to do.”

Senior Joshua Woodworth had the best tournament among the Skyhawks. He placed 32nd overall after he posted rounds of 91 and a team-low round of 76 on Monday, and he followed it with his team’s best Tuesday round of 84. He finished at 251, 35 over.

Freshman Trevor Bogus, a Durango High School alum and son of Mike and Wendi Bogus, finished 38th overall for the Skyhawks with rounds of 91, 83 and 87 for a 261.

Another freshman and Ignacio High School alum Bo Ward, son of Dug Ward and Deanne Kendall, finished third for FLC with a 269 after rounds of 89, 90 and 90. He finished 41st overall.

Mitch Donley and Riggs Winz both finished with 270 and tied for 42nd overall.

There were 48 golfers in the field.

Begay said his team has had a slow start to the season because of snow on the ground at their home course of Hillcrest Golf Club.

“The snowfall put a monkey wrench in the amount of time we can spend on the course,” Begay said. “Everyone struggled this week, we just struggled more.”
