Towaoc man is sentenced to 20 months in prison

Failed to register as sex offender

Glen Earl Cotonuts, 54, of Towaoc was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Christine M. Arguello to serve 20 months in federal prison for failure to register as a sex offender.

After his prison sentence, Arguello ordered him to spend five years on supervised release.

Cotonuts was indicted by a federal grand jury Oct. 1, 2012. A jury found him guilty in October 2013. He was sentenced Monday, according to a news release Friday from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Cotonuts was required to register under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act. Despite knowing that he had to register, Cotonuts failed to register and update his registration while living on the Ute Mountain Ute reservation.

“For the safety of the public, sex offenders are required by law to register with law enforcement,” U.S. Attorney John Walsh said in the news release. “When a sex offender changes addresses and fails to register, there are serious consequences – including going to prison.”

The case was investigated by the U.S. Marshal’s Service, and Cotonuts was prosecuted by Durango branch office chief James Candelaria.
