As snow season gears up, the town of Bayfield is offering residents tips to handle snow so plows can clear roads quickly and efficiently.
The town’s public notice this week shared which areas are prioritized for plowing, when vehicles could be towed and where drivers should and should not park downtown.
“Your patience during weather emergencies is appreciated,” the notice said. “It is simply impossible to clear all streets immediately.”
During snow emergencies, school bus routes and commercial routes take priority, then residential areas. The notice reminded residents not to flag down plow drivers. Calls making demands on certain areas, or insisting on special treatment, “do not foster a ‘spirit of cooperation,’” the notice said.
If the town manager declares a snow emergency, residents cannot park on emergency snow routes from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. These snow routes include Mill Street from Bayfield Parkway to Buck Highway, Church Street from Mill Street to North Street, and Pearl Street from Mill Street to North Street. The town will give residents updates through its Facebook page and website.
The Bayfield Marshal’s Office may tow vehicles that interfere with snow removal from town streets. The town will try to contact the owner first, unless, for example, the vehicle is a safety threat for other travelers.

In fact, it’s unlawful to push snow into the road.Mark landscaping near town rights-of-way with high-visibility plastic posts. While the town will replace damaged landscaping on private property, it won’t replace anything in the right-of-way area.Shoveling around mailboxes is up to the property owner. The town isn’t responsible for damage to mailboxes, driveway-entry monuments or newspaper boxes.Keep trash cans out of roads. In fact, keep them 2 to 3 feet from the edge of the road.Clear your own sidewalk. Property owners have to clear sidewalks adjacent to private property.
