Traces of snow possible Christmas morning

Purgatory could see 4 to 6 inches

A storm could bring a trace of snow to Durango Christmas morning, but otherwise warm and dry weather could persist.

The snow storm is expected to move in Sunday, Christmas Eve, after dark and it could bring much more snow to areas north of town, but Durango is unlikely to get much, said Jimmy Fowler, meteorologist with National Weather Service.

“I would say Durango is not getting more than a trace to half an inch,” he said.

The town of Silverton could see 1 to 2 inches of snow and the highest peaks could see up to a foot of snow. Winter weather could last through Monday in Silverton and it could bring high winds and make travel dangerous north of Silverton, he said.

“The roads will definitely be hazardous at times,” he said.

Purgatory Resort could see 4 to 6 inches of snow overnight Sunday and in the early morning hours Monday, he said.

Following Christmas Day, Durango is expected to be dry for the next week, Michael Charnick, meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the highs could be 50 degrees or warmer, according to the National Weather Service.

After Christmas Eve, the next chance for Colorado to see precipitation will likely be Dec. 30.

“It looks like everything is going to remain north of Colorado until then,” Charnick said.
