Jordan Lanning of Bayfield High School continued her strong start to the season as she won two events at the prestigious Mickey Dunn Invitational at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction on Saturday.
Lanning won the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 15.46 seconds, and also won the 300 hurdles in 46.84 seconds. She finished second in the high jump with a jump of 5-feet.
The Bayfield girls took fifth overall as it accumulated 50 points. ThunderRidge won the girls team title with 151.50 points, while Grand Junction won the boys title with 100.50 points. BHS took 14th on the boys side with 10 points.
Lanning was not the only one who had a good day in Grand Junction for the Wolverines, as Makayla Barnes finished in third in the shot put with a throw of 34 feet, 9.75 inches. Barnes also took second in the discus throw with a throw of 105 feet, 2 inches, and Mackenzie Younker of Grand Junction won the event with a throw of 121 feet, 6 inches.
In the pole vault, Hannah Whitmer finished in second with a vault of 8 feet, and Grace Szucs of Palmer Ridge won the event with a vault of 10 feet, 2 inches.
On the boys side, BHS also had a champion in David Hawkins, who won the shot put (52 feet, 1.50 inches).
In the track events, Zeb Shields was the Wolverines’ highest finisher when he finished in 12th in the 800-meter dash, with a time of 2 minutes, 10.15 seconds.
BHS will compete at the Abel Velasquez Invitational on Saturday at Ignacio High School.
The Demons also had good performances in Grand Junction on Saturday, with three champions, including two relay teams and 14 top-five finishes between the boys and girls teams.
As a team, the boys took fourth with 66 points, while the girls finished in seventh with 43.
Alex Hise was the lone solo champion for the Demons, after he won the long jump with a jump of 21 feet, 7.50 inches.
The girls 4x800 team of Madeleine Burns, Emma Fitzgerald, Halle Moore and Angela McManus won with a time of 10:16.32, as they edged ThunderRidge, who took second (10:17.90).
DHS also won the boys 4x400 (3:36.42), as Logan Zick, Dylan Baken, Alex Hise and Maxton Warman represented the Demons.
On the girls side, there were a number of placers, as Anna Pylar finished in fourth in the 100 hurdles (18.12), and fourth in the 300 hurdles (49.25). Emma Fitzgerald finished in second in the 400 (1:02.27), while Angela McManus (2:34.40) and Kayleigh Frazer (2:34.63) went 3-4 in the 800. The girls 4x100 team finished in sixth (54.54).
On the boys side, placers included the 4x800 relay team, who finished in second (8:27.36). In addition to winning the long jump, Hise had another top finish and took second in the 100-meter dash (11.51). Kade Christiansen of Grand Junction won (11.35). Maxton Warman finished in fourth in the 400 (53.14).
DHS had three top-six finishes in the 1,600. Aidan Fitzgerald took second (4:21.39), Marcus Flint was fifth (4:38.08) and Paul Knight was sixth (4:39.46). Finally, in the pole vault, Dylan Baken finished in second with a vault of 12 feet.
DHS will compete at the Mullen Invitational next Saturday in Mullen.
The Bobcats opened their season on Saturday as they competed in the Bobcat Invitational hosted by Bloomfield High School in New Mexico.
IHS had one winner between the boys and girls teams, but had several top-six finishes. The girls finished in sixth out of nine teams with 16 points, while the boys finished in seventh out of nine teams with 18 points.
Elco Garcia won the 1,600 with a time of 4:52.07, and won by more than six seconds as Toledo Mauricio was second (4:57.60). Garcia also dominated the 3,200, and won in 11:10.20, while Matthew Hawkins of Kirtland Central was second (11:14.34).
The only other top-six finisher for the boys was Jason Hampton-Foutz, who finished in third in the pole vault with a vault of 8-feet, six inches.
On the girls side, Lexy Young (14,43) and Vanessa Gonzales (14.45) went 3-4 in the 100-meter dash for the Bobcats, while Young also had a fourth-place finish in the 200 (29.30). Charlize Valdez took sixth in the 1,600 (6:06.77). The Valdez sisters also had good scores in the long jump, as Kiana had a jump of 13-feet, 6.25 inches and finished in third, while Charlize was sixth with a jump of 12-feet, 6 inches.
IHS will host the Abel Velasquez Invitational on Saturday.
