Track Roundup: Bayfield, Durango teams have strong showings ahead of state championships

The Bayfield High School boys track team once again showed its strength, but it wasn’t enough to capture the team title at the High Altitude Challenge on Saturday in Alamosa.

The BHS boys came away with a second-place finish after amassing 133 points, 20 back of the host Mean Moose, who took the team title. Fifteen boys teams competed at the meet.

The BHS girls team placed fourth of 24 teams with 64 points. Alamosa won the title with a commanding 210 points. Centauri was second with 103 points.

For the BHS boys, Carl Heide kept up his relentless assault on the hurdles with wins in the 110-meter and 300-meter events. He finished the 110 hurdles in 15.2 seconds, which was 0.88 of a second ahead of teammate Dax Snooks in second place. Heide won the 300 hurdles in 39.32, which was more three seconds clear of second place.

Snooks won the high jump with a height of six feet.

Dawson Heide won the 400 in 50.73 – nearly three full seconds faster than second place – and was second in the 200 with a time of 23.24.

BHS’ 4x100 relay team finished in 44.11 to place first. The 4x400 team was second in 3:33.62, and the 4x200 team was third in 1:36.17. Individual members of the relay teams were not listed in the results.

BHS also got a first-place finish from Ryan Phelps in the discus with a throw of 151-11. BHS’ Josh Kaufmann was second in the event at 137-11.

Wyatt Killinen won the shot put with a toss of 49 feet, beating Phelps’ throw of 46-06, which was good for second. Killinen also was third in the 100 with a time of 11.63.

On the girls side, Jordan Lanning continued her dominant season with three victories at the meet. She won the 100 hurdles with a time of 46.62, the 300 hurdles in 46.62 and took the long jump with a leap of 16-10.5.

The Wolverines also got a strong showing from Tiarra Christensen, who was second in the shot put with a throw of 30-04.25. She also finished third in the discus with a mark of 101-05.

Durango High School

The Durango High School track and field teams had a strong showing at one of the biggest meets of the year.

The girls team came away from the Liberty Bell Invitational in Littleton with an 11th place finish after compiling 28 points, while the boys squad finished 12th with 28 points. There were 33 teams at the meet.

Denver East won the girls meet with 73 points, and Fountain-Fort Carson took the boys title with 105 points.

For the girls, Bekah Moenning placed second in the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 19.74 seconds. Madeleine Burns was fifth in the 1,600 in 5:14.57 and Alyssa McConnell was fourth in the high jump with a height of 5-feet.

The Demons’ 4x400 relay team of Teagan Garand, Emma Fitzgerald, Moenning and Abby Scott placed sixth with a time of 4:13.51, and the 4x800 team of Fitzgerald, Ruth Holcomb, Moenning and Scott finished second in 9:46.04.

On the boys side, Alex Hise won the long jump with a leap of 22-08.50. He also placed fourth in the 100 in 11.30.

In the discus, Braden Evans threw 140-05 to place fifth.

The Demons’ 4x100 relay team of Dylan Baken, Hise, Gavin Mestas and Cody Nightingale finished fourth in 44.03, and the 4x400 relay team of Ben Bates, Noah Bodewes, Aidan Fitzgerald and Hise placed sixth in 3:28.68.

Ignacio High School

The Ignacio High School track teams attended the 60th annual Bloomfield Invitational during the weekend and came away with a pair of top-10 finishes.

The boys team placed eighth with nine points and the girls finished ninth with 11 points.

Bloomfield won the boys meet with 102 points, and Piedra Vista of Farmington won the girls meet with 110.5 points.

There were 14 boys teams and 13 girls teams at the meet.

Natoni Cundiff led the boys with a second place showing in the discus with a throw of 132-02. Jonas Nanaeto was fourth in the 400 in 53.16, and Elco Garcia placed sixth in the 3,200 with a time of 10:46.19.

For the girls, Aliyana White won the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, which was nearly five feet farther than the second-place throw of 34-03. White also was third in the discus with a mark of 103 feet.
