Cheering on their kids in the rain, Bayfield track parents gathered at the roundabout Wednesday morning to send off the team bus to the 3A state meet in Lakewood.
An escort from the Bayfield Marshal's Office led the bus out of town. Competition starts Thursday morning at Jefferson County Stadium and concludes Saturday afternoon.
Ignacio is sending two sprinters and two pole vaulters to state 2A competition.
Bryan Gram will represent the Bobcats in the 400 meters, while Azala Perez will sprint in the 100 meters.
Competing in the pole vault are Lea Monroe and Chrystianne Valdez, making her fourth appearance at state.
For Bayfield, individual qualifiers are Sam Westbrook in shot put and discus; Carl Heide in 110-meter high hurdles and 300-meter intermediate hurdles; Brian Mashak in the 100- and 200-meter runs; Ryan Phelps in discus; Tymbree Florian in long jump; Amber Johnson in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles; and a huge pole-vaulting contingency of Chad Winkler, Colton Fine, Cash Snooks, Katie Hawkins, Emily Bauer and Maddie Foutz.
Several BHS relay teams also are making the trip north, including the 4x100 girls' team of Sheylea Freier, Florian, Johnson and Foutz.
Running both the girls' 4x200 and 4x400 relays are Isis Gonzales, Bridget Goddard, Johnson and Foutz.
On the boy's side, Gus Roberts, David Hawkins, Heide and Mashak will run the 4x200 relay. The 4x400 team is comprised of Cody Speece, Ethan Tate, Heide and Roberts. The 4x800 team is Brandon Stuever, Sloan Mazur, Alex Knight and Speece.
Relay alternates making the trip for BHS are Josh Westbrook, Jackson Sibley and Courtney Bayles.
