Firefighters saved a trailer home from possible destruction Monday at the Westside Mobile Park in west Durango.
Residents used a torch to try to melt frozen water pipes but accidentally caught some insulation on fire, said Tony Harwig, battalion chief for the Durango Fire & Rescue Authority.
The fire occurred at 2:39 p.m. at the trailer park, 21134 U.S. Highway 160.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames before they entered the house, he said. The home filled with smoke, but the family was able to reoccupy the trailer Monday evening.
“They’re back in it, but they’re without water because they lost their water line,” Harwig said. “Hopefully tomorrow when it’s sunny, they can get under there and start working again.”
Firefighters helped install temporary insulation and plywood skirting to the home.
