A stand-alone trailer burned to the ground Wednesday west of Marvel in southwest La Plata County, leaving one man without a home.
Fire investigators were trying to determine the cause, but the damage was so intense that it may be impossible to know with certainty how the fire started, said Chris Anderson, chief of the Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District. One possible source of ignition is a wood stove, he said.
The fire was reported at 11:17 a.m. on County Road 100.
It was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, so they immediately began an exterior attack.
“The owner showed up right away, so we knew there weren’t any occupants,” Anderson said.
The trailer and all possessions inside are considered a total loss, he said. A nearby shed sustained slight damage.
“We also had high winds, which contributed to the spread,” he said.
About 15 firefighters responded, including members of the Durango Fire Protection District.
