Trails 2000 offers daily trail condition updates

Updates lets users know what to expect
Trails 2000 now offers daily updates on trail conditions around Durango.

For those who frequent trails around Durango, there’s a new resource that provides daily updates on trail conditions.

Mary Monroe, executive director of Trails 2000, said the organization started providing trail conditions on its website about 3 years ago, but recently, the group wanted to get that information out in more real-time.

This spring, Trails 2000 held a “trail reporter” training at Ska Brewing, in which about 50 people were taught to use a mobile friendly app that allows trail users to update information while they are on the trails.

Since word has spread about the program, Monroe said there are about 100 trail reporters.

“Trail reporters go on their phone, answer some questions, load a photo, and that information goes back to Trails 2000 website,” she said. “Last month, we updated every day as we were seeing snow melt, mud and things. That way people know which trails are available.”

Monroe said the coverage area includes Silverton to the north, Phil’s World to the west, Bayfield to the east and down to the Alien Trail in Farmington to the south.

“It’s a good resource for finding state of trails, especially during shoulder seasons and changing weather,” she said. “Still, people do have to use common sense. If it’s raining, you have to look outside before you look at the website.”
