Trails 2000’s ‘Sky Steps’ to connect downtown Durango, Fort Lewis College

Fitness stairway to ascend 250 vertical feet

Trails 2000 is working on a project that will connect downtown Durango to Fort Lewis College.

The non-profit organization has teamed with the city of Durango, FLC and dozens of volunteers to extend the stairway on the Nature Trail. The group is calling the endeavor “Project Sky Steps.”

There were 96 stairs on the trail, but Trails 2000 Director Mary Monroe Brown said there will be more than 500 stairs once the project is completed. The steps will ascend more than 250 vertical feet.

The project is one quarter finished, and the group hopes to have it completed by the end of May.

“They’re a great commuter route and an excellent fitness stairway,” Brown said.

Work is ongoing as volunteers come forward. So far, Boy Scout Troop 501, Crossfit Catacombs, Crossfit Durango, Durango Running Company, FLC’s cross country team, FLC’s Upward Bound program and Russell Planning and Engineering have helped, along with dozens more individual volunteers.
