Trappers Crossing subdivision recently completed a fire mitigation day for Wildfire Awareness month in May. Our goal was to clear roads of brush and trees to improve visibility, access for emergency responders and to minimize the chance of a roadside fire.
This was initiated by an assessment and recommendations from Charlie Landsman, neighborhood ambassador coordinator for Wildfire Adapted Partnership, with members of our HOA Board and Fire Prevention Committee.
The May 1 event was attended by many homeowner volunteers, Director of Emergency Management for La Plata County Shawna Legarza, Emergency Management Coordinator for La Plata County Rob Farino, Wildland Coordinator with Durango Fire Protection District Scott Nielsen and Charlie Landsman.
Our community appreciates the professionalism, support and hard work of these agencies. Volunteers spent the day cutting, clearing and stacking brush and trees. The event was spearheaded by homeowner and Fire Committee Chair Lynn Ilg.
While we met our goals for the day, there is much more work to be done. Homeowners participated in a Q&A during lunch and Charlie gave a presentation updating the attendees on specific recommendations for homes and information on overall fire suppression tactics and priorities.
Both Charlie and Scott are happy to schedule individual home visits for interested homeowners who need further mitigation efforts. I highly recommend seeking the advice of these wonderful experts. We are fortunate to have experts willing and able to provide information and assitance to help achieve a safer community!
