Travel conditions treacherous as heavy snow continues

Predicted snow totals range from 6 to 20 inches

Heavy snow in the region is expected to continue through Tuesday.

Between 6 to 12 inches of snow is predicted in Durango and higher elevations could see up to 20 inches, said Andrew Lyons, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

“We will see some heavy snow and blowing snow. ... We really do encourage people to not drive,” he said.

A winter storm warning is in effect through 5 p.m. Tuesday for Durango, Bayfield, Ignacio and Pagosa Springs.

For higher elevations, including Hesperus, Rico and Silverton, the winter storm warning is in effect until midnight Tuesday.

At higher elevations the wind could gust up to 55 mph and visibility could be limited to a half mile, the warning advised.

It is expected to be a wet storm, and it could cause power outages.

The high Wednesday is expected to be 36 degrees.

Chain laws are in effect on U.S. Highway 550 at Coal Bank, Molas and Red Mountain passes as well as on U.S. Highway 160 at Wolf Creek Pass.

Puragtory Resort reported an inch of snow Monday and Wolf Creek Ski Area reported 8 inches of snow.

The storm is expected to clear out Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Sunny skies and warm temperatures are expected for the rest of the week.

Temperatures could reach the low-50s during the weekend.
