Per Colorado state law, every July and January, the treasurer must present their “books” to the board of county commissioners at a public meeting. This allows the public to ask any questions of the treasurer as well. The report presented must also be filed with the county clerk, so anyone can review it, as well as this same report for all the past years – going back decades. And, it also must be published in the Herald.
You have multiple opportunities to see that the county treasurer balances, to the penny, for all the tax authorities in La Plata County. The county treasurer not only collects money for the county, but also for dozens of other entities, such as the city of Durango, fire districts, library districts and many metro districts – such as Three Springs. These organizations have their own auditors confirm with the treasurer the amounts due and paid as well. So the treasurer’s receipts and disbursements are scrutinized by many.
And all of this normal, usual, and required by law. Every year. No money has ever gone missing. Ever. All back up documentation for every transaction – every receipt, every disbursement – is available for your review upon request. We welcome your attention to the details. Please call us, email me (Allison.aichele@co.laplata.co.us) or stop by if you have any questions or concerns. This is how we learn to improve.
Thank you for supporting our community, and the firefighters, with your property tax dollars!
