As treasurer of Archuleta County, I recently attended a division meeting of 30 treasurers. I mentioned that I had seen a campaign brochure of the La Plata County treasurer. In that brochure, the county treasurer stated that she had the highest internal controls of any county treasurer in Colorado. My peers believe 63 county treasurers will respond the same way: They are appalled at the gall of her making such a statement. There is no rating system that would support such a claim.
We all work with different auditors, different finance directors, and different administrations. There is no one review board to which we each submit our work and documentation. To put it mildly, her claim is fictitious. It is a boast that she created in her own world.
Even if the statement had some validity to it, and it has none, we did not need thousands of dollars and four material weakness findings to make us do our jobs. I stopped helping the La Plata County Treasurer because I do not want to work with someone who consistently conjures up fictitious claims and continually shifts responsibility for her incompetence to others. If I lived in La Plata County, I would cast my vote for Colton Black.
