Tribe holding council election today

11 Southern Utes competing for 2 council seats

Eleven candidates are vying for two Tribal Council seats in the Southern Ute Indian Tribe's general election Nov. 4.

The ballot, which is subject to change, includes one incumbent, Tribal Council member Mel Baker, in addition to Marjorie Borst, Matthew Box, Joycelyn Peabody Dutchie, Byron Frost, Kevin Frost, Estelle Monte, Adam Red, Howard Richards, Sr., Shane Seibel and Tara Vigil.

Some have competed for a Tribal Council seat in years past, including Borst, a tribal elder, and Kevin Frost, who both ran unsuccessfully last year against three other candidates for two open seats.

Box, Borst, Dutchie and Richards have held council seats in years past.

Seven members comprise the council, including the chairman. A tribal government spokesman said Councilor James M. Olguin is not seeking re-election.

The number of terms is unlimited, and elections are staggered over three years.

All tribal members, including those who live off-reservation, are eligible to vote in tribal elections.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at the Sun Ute Community Center, 290 Mouache Drive, Ignacio.
