Troopers ask drivers to slow down after officer’s death

DENVER – The Colorado State Patrol is pleading with drivers to slow down when they see roadside wrecks after a trooper was struck and killed by car this week.

The Denver Post reports 52-year-old Cpl. Daniel Groves was hit by a car during the blizzard Wednesday as he was helping a driver who had slid off Interstate 76 near Denver.

Col. Matthew Packard says several people had stopped to try to resuscitate Groves, who had served the state patrol for 12 years.

Authorities say high speed and poor driving conditions possibly contributed to the crash.

Packard says the Weld County District Attorney’s Office will decide if charges will be filed.

A memorial service for Groves is scheduled for Thursday in Longmont.

Packard says Groves will be remembered as a hero.
