Humans learn from mistakes by suffering natural consequences for poor decisions. American farmers, who overwhelmingly voted for President Trump, are beginning to suffer the consequence of their vote to disrupt world trade.
The results of Trump’s tariff wars with China, Canada, Mexico, the EU and just about everyone else in the world (with the exceptions of Russia and North Korea) have been to reduce export options for farm products which, in turn, threatens the prices for domestic farm output. These ominous existential threats to U.S. agriculture haven’t yet registered with Trump’s base. Their attitude was summed up by one farmer who said, “(Trump) has a lot of experience with negotiation. He wrote a book on it.”
This statement is testimony to the efficacy of Trump’s strategy of creating his own, alternate reality. But the facts are that he has no experience negotiating with world leaders on matters of government or trade nor did he write any books; his books were entirely ghost-written. It’s doubtful he even read his books, let alone wrote them.
Voters can make a difference come November and in 2020. By their screaming silence, both Rep. Scott “Tea Party” Tipton and Sen. Cory Gardner are complicit in Trump’s degradation of American institutions (EPA, Justice, Education, State, a free press). These men have fallen short of the oaths they swore when they took office to defend the Constitution and faithfully represent their constituents.
Please don’t waste your next vote on the party of Trump. Heed this warning or we’ll all suffer the natural consequences.
