Dec. 14 marked five years since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings.
Twenty first-grade students and 6 adults were murdered in their classrooms by Adam Lanza, a 20-year-old, severely mentally ill man who murdered his mother before embarking on his murderous rampage.
I did not want to think, or write about this horrific, unspeakable act again, but we must. It is so excruciatingly painful to think of the parents of these murdered children, and how they cope with their loss every day.
I remember President Obama, as he spoke to the parents, families and friends of these murdered children, gathered together, in shock, and desperately needing comfort, solace and a compassionate soul to keep them from drowning in sorrow.
I remember President Obama reading aloud the names of the children. When he reached the name of Madeleine, he began to weep. He took into his own heart all of those children and their families. Their loss became his loss, and I loved him for that.
On this five-year remembrance, Donald Trump did not express any sadness or consolation; he never even mentioned Sandy Hook. Instead, he invited National Rifle Association president Wayne La Pierre to the White House for lunch.
As long as Trump is in office, we are in danger of losing our sanity, our humanity, our history, and our democratic ideals and freedoms.
Let’s fight the good fight. Hold our Congress members accountable. Sign petitions. The future of our children and grandchildren is at stake.
