Canyons of the Ancients will host a lecture about turkey feather blankets at 1 p.m. April 27 at Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum, 27501 Hwy 184, Dolores.
Southwest Colorado Canyons Alliance will present Bill Lipe, Ph.D., and Mary Weahkee, assistant archaeologist for New Mexico.
In Lipe’s investigation, “How Many Turkeys Does it Take to Make a Blanket?” his study looks at how turkey feather blankets were made, how many feathers it took and how the feathers were obtained without killing a lot of turkeys just to get their feathers. Weahkee is a master at replicas using natural materials. The two will compare known archaeological examples of turkey feather blankets and modern replicas.
