Twenty-first century news and opinion requires hashtags, 140 characters

From the Editorial Board:

Digital disruption. Simply, it is a term used to describe the internet’s impact on most industries.

The popularity of Airbnb and Uber, which rely on digital technologies and business models, are at the center of the disruption of the lodging and travel industries, for example.

The communication industry, print media in particular, is not immune, nor is this a new phenomenon. To remain competitive, news has adapted to the ascension of radio, television, cable and now the digital age. Traditional newspapers, ceding attention to the web and the variety of news, information and opinion available there, have been evolving. We are too.

Through the opinion section, the Editorial Board seeks to foster a climate in which debate about local issues and constructive change can occur. We recognize the print edition, via letters to the editor, allows readers only one way to interact. We also recognize the pace of information exchange has accelerated and seek new ways for our readers to respond.

Connecting and engaging with readers requires we reach out to the community in all the ways it interacts. Today, as one of several new initiatives, we are excited to announce the launch of Durango Herald Opinion on Facebook and Twitter where we will post links to all contents of the opinion page (editorials, op-eds, letters and cartoons) for consideration and comment. Reverse publishing will allow social media comments to be seen in print.

It is our hope that this forum will help attract new and diverse audiences, particularly younger people, and stimulate thought and activate conversation. With Durango Herald Opinion, we aim to create a space where readers can exchange intelligent and informed commentary that enhances the quality of our opinion pages. We value and welcome thoughtful comments representing a range of views.

As a newspaper serving the greater Durango area since 1881, we know our community has many ways of learning what is happening locally and around the world. Social media is playing an increasingly important part.

We look forward to you joining us at Facebook.com/DurangoHeraldOpinion and on Twitter at @DHOpinion and letting us know what you think.
