Two Durango girls tennis teams reach regional finals

West sisters and a Hackett on to the finals

The CHSAA Class 4A Region 8 girls tennis tournament turned into a sister act for Durango High School on Thursday in Grand Junction.

No. 3 singles player Kit Hackett and the No. 4 doubles team of twin sisters Chloe and Emily West survived to reach the regional finals.

The Wests will face Steamboat Springs after defeating Montezuma-Cortez 6-1, 6-1 and Hotchkiss 6-4, 6-3 following a first-round bye.

Hackett also received a bye in the first round and beat Montezuma-Cortez 6-4, 6-1 and Montrose 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 to reach Steamboat Springs in Saturday’s finals.

“She’s feeling comfortable. She knows she can make her own destiny,” DHS head coach Dave Weisfeldt said. “She’s thrilled to get that far.”

The rest of the Demons fell into the playback bracket, where they still can reach the state tournament as long as whoever beat them wins the regional.

Then the remaining teams play for a right to go to state.

Kit’s younger sister, Maggie Hackett, playing at No. 2 singles, didn’t find as smooth of a bracket.

She followed a first-round bye with a 7-6 (9-7), 6-0 loss to Aspen.

“She couldn’t get any momentum there in the second set,” Weisfeldt said.

Since Aspen lost to Montrose, Maggie Hackett’s season is over.

No. 1 singles player Sarah Harrelson also is done after losing to Aspen 6-2, 6-1 in the second round.

She beat Vail Mountain (5-7, 6-4, 6-1) in the first round.

Aspen lost to Steamboat after that, which end Harrelson’s season.

“Brutal at the top of the lineup,” Weisfeldt said.

Durango’s No. 1 doubles team of Skylar Barr and Hannah Liberman won 6-1, 7-5 over Delta before losing 6-2, 6-1 to Vail Mountain.

In the consolation bracket, they beat Vail mountain 6-4, 7-5 and will play for third Saturday.

Audrey Morris and Jenni Snowberger, playing at No. 2 doubles, followed a first round by with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Delta before losing 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) to Montrose.

They then beat Vail 6-2, 6-2 to move into the consolation finals.

“Still theoretically alive (for state),” Weisfeldt said. “We think there’s less of a chance that Montrose will win that final.”

Jenna Engleken and Hailee Pritchard lost to Steamboat 6-3, 6-4 and Hotchkiss 6-2, 6-1 to wrap up their season at No. 3 doubles.
