It was another successful weekend for Durango’s Young America Football League teams with three of the five squads picking up wins, two of which came via shutout.
Durango’s second-grade team pounded Bloomfield in a 34-0 shutout, following the lead of Jerad Lopez, who returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown.
Lopez added two more TDs, and quarterback Patrick Tucson found Rylan Ernst for a touchdown pass. Ernst also scored a touchdown on the ground.
The Demons’ defense limited the Bobcats offense with a ferocious pass rush. Darion Allen recorded several sacks and recovered a fumble. Oliver Nez also had a fumble recovery and Tucson had an interception.
The Demons will host the Farmington Crush, a team the Demons expect to be a tough challenge, on Saturday morning at Miller Middle School.
Durango’s fifth-graders kept their perfect season rolling with a 24 -7 win against the Aztec Longhorns. The offense controlled the game with four rushing touchdowns. Cole Pontine had two TDs on the ground, and Cully Feeney and Wyatt Bartel had a touchdown each.
The Demons scooped up six fumbles. Marley Linch led the fumble recovery bonanza with four, while Feeney and Nick Lee each jumped on a fumble.
The Demons will host the Farmington Titans, who are undefeated as well, with the No. 1 seed in the playoffs on the line on Saturday at Miller Middle School.
The third-grade Demons closed out its season with a 38-0 shutout against the Farmington Saints. It was Durango’s fifth shutout of the season.
Durango’s offensive line of Jayden Dosch, Cole McWhirter, Vance Southerland, Nedell Wilson and Colton Zellitti opened up holes and provided time for five different Demons to find the end zone. Grady Feeney ran for a touchdown and threw for another, connecting with Blaze Aguliar for a score. KJ Reynolds ran for two TDs, and Tyler Dugan and Aguilar also had rushing scores.
The Demons will be off until Oct. 21 when they begin the playoffs.
The fourth-grade Demons had a rough day against Bayfield and fell 25-0. Bayfield’s textbook tackling and stout defense kept the Durango offense from picking up any steam.
Quarterback Brady Hoerl hit Lyle Huff for a couple nice plays, but Huff was never able to break away for a score.
Steven Gallegos, Cooper Mitchell and Max Schtakleff led the defnese with seven tackles apiece.
The Demons will host Bloomfield on Saturday afternoon.
Durango’s sixth-grade team suffered a 14-0 loss to the Aztec Tigers.
