Two flown to Denver in critical condition

State Patrol still investigating cause of the accident

A serious crash on Colorado Highway 172 resulted in two people being flown to Denver for treatment.

The two-vehicle accident occurred at approximately 10:22 p.m. Sunday night at Milepost 19, Capt. Adrian Driscoll of the Colorado State Patrol said. Milepost 19 is located on the big curve about 2 miles east of the Durango-La Plata County Airport.

“It’s still under investigation, because it looks like they both hit right at the center line, so we’re not sure what the cause is yet,” he said.

Ignacio resident Angelo Aguilar, 33, was driving a 2013 Chrysler 300. He was transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center, where he was treated and released, according to Mercy spokesman David Bruzzese.

Revas Higgins, 80, of Arizona, was driving the other vehicle, a 1993 Lincoln. He and his passenger, Rebecca Middleton, 61, were flown to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Lakewood with serious bodily injuries, Driscoll said.

St. Anthony’s spokeswoman Loralee Sturm said both Higgins and Middleton were in critical condition as of Tuesday morning.

Alcohol is not suspected, Driscoll said.

Colorado Highway 172 was closed for about 25 minutes.
