Leila Baker (left) and James Bulwan, both incumbents, have won their reelection campaigns for the Ignacio School District board of education.

Incumbents Leila Baker and James Bulwan have been voted in for another four-year term on the Ignacio School District Board of Education.

Baker and Bulwan ran alongside newcomer Christine Sage for two open seats in the at-large race.

With most votes counted, Bulwan clocked in at 41%, Baker close behind at 35%, and Sage trailing at 24%.

Bulwan

Bulwan promised to improve teacher hiring, retention and salary; acquire more housing for teachers and staff; and improve student absenteeism and achievement in testing.

“It’s pretty exciting,” Bulwan told The Durango Herald of the win. “I’d like to thank the community that voted for me, and I look forward to continuing another four years of making improvements to Ignacio School District. We’ve got a lot on the agenda to accomplish.”

Baker

Baker’s top initiatives include continuing efforts to ensure Ignacio’s educators are able to live and work in the area, addressing attendance issues, and continuing to support and celebrate students and staff with her presence at school events and activities.

Baker was not immediately available for comment Tuesday night.

Sage

Sage had hoped to pursue seeking more federal grants; supporting all students, parents and staff in the district; and communicating more with the Ignacio community at large.

“I wish everybody well, and I want to thank everybody that did vote for me,” Sage told the Herald. “And I will absolutely continue supporting the school (district).”

Ignacio School District Superintendent Chris deKay told the Herald a close race was expected. “I feel like all three of them have community very much in their hearts,” he said. “The election went the way that it went, but we're just grateful to have had three very strong candidates.”
