Two killed in crash east of Bayfield during hailstorm

U.S. Highway 160 closed for 3½ hours

Two people died in a three-vehicle crash Tuesday evening on U.S. Highway 160 east of Bayfield near the Archuleta-La Plata county line, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The crash occurred shortly before 7 p.m. near mile marker 110, said Capt. Adrian Driscoll with the State Patrol. The highway was closed for about 3½ hours, from about mile markers 109 to 112, he said.

A hailstorm appears to have played a role in the crash, Driscoll said.

A vehicle heading west toward Bayfield crossed the center line and hit an oncoming pickup pulling a trailer, he said. The vehicle that crossed the center line was from Las Cruces, New Mexico, and had four occupants. Two of those occupants died on scene and two were taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center, Driscoll said.

The pickup heading eastbound had two occupants, one was taken to Mercy and the other was taken to St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood.

Driscoll did not have names and hometowns of the crash victims Tuesday night, nor did he have the specific make and models of the vehicles.

Drugs and alcohol are not suspected factors in the crash, he said.

The vehicle that crossed the center line also hit an eastbound Dodge Ram pickup that had five occupants, none of whom was injured.

No further information was immediately available Tuesday night.
